The founder of Maliyo Games, Hugo Obi, has declared that the future of gaming lies in diversity, inclusivity, and global representation, as Africa’s gaming ecosystem continues to gain momentum on the international stage.
Speaking at a recent industry forum, Obi emphasized the need for more culturally relevant content and broader participation from underrepresented regions, particularly in Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.
“The gaming industry is no longer the preserve of a few dominant markets,” Obi said. “We are seeing a shift—one where diverse voices, stories, and talents are reshaping how games are made and who gets to play them.”
Founded in 2012, Maliyo Games has positioned itself as a trailblazer in African game development, creating mobile games rooted in local narratives and everyday experiences. The studio has also been instrumental in talent development, offering training programs to nurture the next generation of African game developers.
Obi highlighted three key trends shaping the industry’s evolution: the rise of mobile gaming in emerging markets, growing demand for authentic cultural content, and a new wave of independent developers leveraging accessible technology to build and distribute games globally.
Industry analysts agree. “Africa is one of the most exciting frontiers in gaming,” said Helena Wright, a global media strategist. “With mobile-first populations and a rich pool of creative talent, the continent is well-positioned to influence the next chapter of gaming history.”
However, challenges remain. Infrastructure gaps, limited funding, and low investor awareness continue to hinder growth. Obi called for more cross-border collaboration, public-private partnerships, and investment in local ecosystems to unlock the full potential of the global gaming community.
“As we move forward, it’s not just about playing games—it’s about who gets to tell the stories,” Obi concluded.
With Maliyo Games leading the charge, Africa’s gaming future looks increasingly bright—and undeniably global.
